Which one you specify depends on whether the panel needs a glass substrate. Both take the same stone.

Honeycomb-backed

The core carries the load and diffuses the light, so a large face lights evenly with no source visible through the stone. The lighter of the two, and the usual choice for vertical feature work.

Onyx first, then the translucent quartzites and semi-precious materials. Availability is block-dependent, so treat this as a starting list rather than a catalogue.

Selected at the block

Onyx does not reveal its character until a block is opened. Selecting at that stage — rather than buying finished slabs — is what makes a consistent run possible across a wall, and it is the only point at which faults can be avoided rather than disguised.

It matters more for onyx than for any other stone, because everything is going to be lit. A repair invisible in a yard becomes the most visible thing on the wall.

  • Fissure-free cutting where the piece requires it, rather than fissures filled and finished over.
  • No discoloured epoxy. Standard practice in the slab market; unacceptable in material that will be lit.
  • Pantone range matching for budgeted work, so specified colour is delivered colour.
  • Exact matching sourced where a brand or an existing interior sets the target.
